ELIGIBILITY

Any person with a disease for which there is evidence that exercise should be integrated into their healthcare is eligible. The frailer the patient the more benefit they are likely to experience.

Diseases which are specifically targeted by the Centre for STRONG Medicine due to the robust evidence base supporting the utility of exercise in their management are listed below.

1. Any person over the age of 60

OR

2. A person of any age with one or more of the following conditions:

  • Arthritis (Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis)
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Chronic Neurological Degenerative Disorders
  • Congestive Heart Failure (stable)
  • Dementia
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Difficulty with Mobility or Gait and Balance Problems
  • Falls
  • Frailty
  • Heart Disease
  • Hip Fracture
  • HIV
  • Insomnia
  • Joint Replacement
  • Loss of Appetite or Weight Loss
  • Loss of Functional Abilities
  • Osteoporosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Recent Hospitalisation with Functional Decline
  • Renal Impairment or Failure
  • Sarcopenia
  • Steroid Treatment from any disease
  • Stroke
  • Transplants
  • Use of Multiple Medications

 

Conditions which MAY contraidicate an exercise prescription are listed below, noting that they will be assessed by Professor Maria Fiatarone Singh on a case-by-case basis:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
  • Cerebral Aneurysm
  • Unstable Heart Disease
  • Recent Heart Attack (3 months)
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Hernias
  • Prolapse of the Bladder or Bowel
  • Proliferative Retinopathy
  • Severe Aortic Stenosis
  • Recent fractured bone(s)

When referring a patient, please indicate if there is a history of:

  • Any injury or damage to specific joints, especially shoulders
  • Unstable Diabetes
  • Unstable Ischemic Heart Disease
  • Rectocele or Cystocele
  • Inguinal or Umbilical Hernia
  • Significant Haemorrhoids
  • Gout
